Officials say the source of the gas odor has been tracked down to 
Universal Lubricants, Inc in the 2800 block of North Ohio Street.

HAZMAT investigators have determined the smell is being caused by 
chemical called mercaptan. The chemical is an odorant added to natural 
gas to give it a pungent smell for safety purposes.

Mercaptan is a harmless gas that produces a sulfur-like smell that can 
be unbearable to some people.

Residents in the city of Wichita and towns to the south may notice a 
strong gas smell in the area.

Officials say a lubricant plant in Wichita was performing routine 
maintenance on Thursday night and used a solvent to clean some of their 
equipment. Because of weather conditions including a low cloud ceiling, 
the smell is not dissipating as quickly as it should. Wind is blowing 
the smell south into the towns of Haysville and Derby.

Wallula An ammonia leak at the Tyson Foods in Wallula forced a temporary 
evacuation of part of the plant, but no injuries were reported.

Firefighters from Walla Walla Fire District 5 in Burbank were called to 
the plant around 10 a.m. for a hazardous material response in the 
mechanical room.

Chief Mike Wickstrom said a seal in a valve failed on an ammonia line, 
causing ammonia to get dumped onto the floor.

(UNIVERSITY CITY) Seven units on the top floor of a University City 
apartment building were evacuated, while other residents on that floor 
were ordered to shelter in place, after a chemical irritant released 
into the air sent five people to the hospital.

San Diego Fire Rescue and hazmat crews were called to the La Jolla 
Crossroads on  the 9000 block of Judicial Drive shortly after 7pm 
Wednesday. Several residents on the building's fifth floor complained of 
symptoms of a burning, irritated throat and nose, as if they had been 
exposed to a chemical similar to pepper spray.

In all, five residents were transported to the hospital to be treated 
for those symptoms, which abated over time. Fire officials confirm that 
some sort of chemical irritant, perhaps pepper spray, had been released 
on the floors, and diffused through the air. Two firefighters were also 
examined at the scene, but did not need to be hospitalized.

SINGAPORE - Shell is still working with the Singapore Civil Defence 
Force (SCDF) to contain the fire at Pulau Bukom.

A statement from the company at 2pm said their global fire consultants 
are on site to provide input to the team. 

Shell said that at around noon, they experienced a surge in the flames - 
visible from the mainland, with witnesses in the Pasir Panjang area 
saying they heard at least three explosions. However, the fire 
"continues to be contained", said Shell.

The source of the surge in the fire was "remnant light fuel components 
where the fire originated".

The smoke observed is from "hydrocarbons that are not fully combusted", 
added Shell in its statement.

Hazardous Material  (HAZMAT) crews responded to a reported chemical 
spill at the Annapolis Water Reclamation Facility at 7228 Edgewood Road 
early Monday afternoon.

The report came in just before noon, said Tony Spencer, a spokesman for 
the Annapolis Fire Department.

The chemical in the incident has been identified as hydrochloric acid. 
Half a liter of the substance was spilled in the basement, according to 
an updated news release from Spencer. 

Spencer said in the release that the acid was contained and neutralized.

An explosion of a tank containing a toxic gas left 48 people admitted to 
hospital, some in critical condition.

The explosion, at a scrap metal yard in the densely populated Shauri 
Moyo Estate in Nairobi, caused panic as residents and passers-by inhaled 
the chlorine acid fumes.

The explosion filled the air with huge yellow fumes, which choked many,

A formaldehyde spill at Ashe Memorial Hospital at approximately 8 a.m. 
Wednesday morning necessessitated the activation of the Hospital's 
Hazardous Materials Response Plan, said R.D. Williams, Ashe Memorial 
Hospital's Chief Executive Officer. 

"Due to the dangerous nature of this chemical, precautions have been 
taken to protect patients, visitors, and staff at Ashe Memorial," said 
Williams, in a press release at 1:12 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

"Several employees have received first aid and have been decontaminated 
due to exposure to the spill," said Williams. "Other employees from the 
affected areas have been evaluated and moved to other areas in the 
facility."
