DUPONT RAMP TO REOPEN AFTER LEAKING LIQUID CONTAINED

The Dupont ramp to northbound Interstate 69 is expected to reopen 
shortly after a non-hazardous petroleum-based material leaked from the 
trailer of a stalled tractor-trailer rig Sunday night, according to the 
Indiana State Police.

Troopers observed a liquid leaking from the trailer when they stopped to 
assist the driver of the tractor-trailer rig about 11:40 p.m., the 
report said. The ramp and northbound lanes at the 116 mile marker were 
closed for a short time while emergency crews identified and contained 
the spill, police said.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Team determined 
that the product was isocyanate, a non-hazardous product commonly used 
in the manufacture of foam. No injuries were reported, according to the 
fire department report, and the spill was contained in the area around 
the Star Transportation trailer.

MENTOR -- Interstate 90 eastbound is now open between Route 306 and 
Route 615 while crews clean up from a fire on a tractor trailer carrying 
hundreds of cases of motor oil early Monday morning.

The right lane will remain closed until further notice, ODOT said.

The entrance ramp to I-90 eastbound from SR 306 is still closed, but the 
exit ramp to SR 306 is open.

Hazmat crews will remain on the scene throughout the morning as cleanup 
continues from the oil fire and the chemicals used to extinguish the 
flames.

The fire started on the truck's tires and spread to the trailer hauling 
approximately 350 cases of motor oil, officials say.

Hazmat crews try to find out what kind of chemicals caused a skin 
reaction to a man in Winnebago. Crews are investigating at 8993 
Bridgeland Road in Winnebago. Rockford Fire Chief Derek Bergsten says 
the man found several 35 gallon drums of an unknown chemical. Several 
agencies are investigating. We'll bring you more information as if 
becomes available

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Firefighters are battling a huge chemical fire on the 
west side of St. Louis, which has forced the evacuation of several 
nearby homes and the hospitalization of three firefighters.

Reports are that several tanks of acetone and ethanol caught fire around 
2:30 this morning at the Chemisphere Corp. in the 2100 block of Cliffton 
Avenue. The first 911 call came in at 2:33 with reports of flames at the 
site.

St. Louis Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson says three firefighters have been 
taken to the hospital following an explosion but that they are in stable 
condition.

ALAIEDON TWP. - An Okemos man and lawn care worker were hospitalized 
today after a motorist struck a parked TruGreen vehicle on Jolly Road, 
causing 200 gallons of fertilizer to spill out, police said.

The Okemos man, age 92, and the TruGreen employee, age 27, were listed 
in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries this afternoon at 
Sparrow Hospital, said Ingham County Sheriff=92s Sgt. Jeff Weiss.

Weiss said the Delhi Township Fire Department and the Ingham County 
Hazmat Team were dispatched to Jolly Road, just west of Van Atta Road, 
shortly after the 9:35 a.m. accident to help contain the fertilizer 
spill from the TruGreen vehicle. They remained at the scene for about 
three hours.

Weiss said the spill appeared to be nontoxic.

ROYAL PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach County Fire Rescue hazmat team 
is on scene at a "chemical spill" in Palms West Surgicenter located at 
13001 Southern Boulevard in Royal Palm Beach.

According to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue's spokesman Don DeLucia, 
there was a chemical spill of formaldehyde in one of the labs of Palms 
West Medical Center.

Dispatchers received the call at approximately 2:30p.m.

"A portion of the Palms West Surgicenter has been evacuated while hazmat 
crews stabilize the situation.  One person suffered minor injuries and 
was taken to the emergency room of Palms West Hospital." said DeLucia.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Hazmat crews were called out to a chemical spill 
on the city=92s southwest side Friday evening. Officials said the spill 
at a business presented no public danger.

Three departments - Wayne Township, Indianapolis and Decatur Township 
fire departments - were called to Hill & Griffith Co. at Farnsworth 
Street and Holt Road at about 6:30 to respond of an overturned tanker 
and a chemical spill.

The labeling on the tanker, which had been parked in an area where the 
ground was soft and had subsequently sunk into the ground and 
overturned, indicated it held hypochlorite, a bleaching agent.

Crews donned sealed suits and masks to work near the trailer and found 
about 25 gallons of the liquid chemical was contained to a grassy area, 
and the leak had stopped. Wayne Township Fire Department said the spill 
presented no danger to the public, and crews remained on the scene to 
await a cleanup contractor employed by the tanker=92s owner, Switzer 
Tanklines from Mt. Summit.

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- North Little Rock firefighters put out 
a chemical fire Friday at a steel storage tank business.

It was at Hall Tank Company on East 5th street. Firefighters aren't sure 
how the fire started -- but say it was mostly paper and other materials 
burning.

Because there was some resin and tanks near by, they didn't take any 
chances, and used foam to get the fire out in about five minutes.

Emergency crews are cleaning up the scene at the Hess gas station at the 
intersection of the Arterial West and North Street where the emergency 
fire extinguishing system was triggered, dousing four vehicles and their 
occupants with flame suppressing chemicals.
An employee of the station said the extinguishers over the pumps were 
accidentally set off by a customer.
An Auburn fire truck was brought in to wash the chemical spray off the 
coated vehicles and the parking lot.

AHMEDABAD: A chemical storagehouse on Sarkhej-Sanand highway caught fire 
late on Friday night. Firefighting continued for 12 hours as Ahmedabad 
Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) personnel worked round the clock to 
douse the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby industrial units. 

According to AFES officials, they got a call at 11 pm for a fire at 
Micra Inks Pvt Ltd near Navjivan Hotel. Two vehicles were dispatched to 
the spot. The vehicles soon reported the intensity of the fire after 
which a brigade call was issued. A total of three officers and 80 
personnel reached the spot with three firefighters and 29 tankers. 

"It was an intense fire as the material stored at the godown contained 
ink and adhesive material which contain alcohol and solvent. We have not 
been able to ascertain the ignition point of the fire. We believe it 
could have started due to leakage of material or rise in pressure on the 
drums due to heat and moisture. The fire started around 11 pm after 
which it quickly spread to other parts due to the flammability of the 
stored material," said Rajesh Bhatt, additional chief fire officer of 
AFES.

STILLWATER -- An 18-year-old man died Friday night after apparently 
inhaling a deadly vapor while in a car in his driveway.

A leading state fire official says the death bears resemblance to what's 
called a "chemical suicide," but officials are still investigating the 
circumstances.

Joshua J. Brisbin of 3 Riverside Drive was pronounced dead at the scene 
by Saratoga County Coroner Thomas Salvadore, sheriff's officials said. 
The man "had succumbed to some chemicals that were in the vehicle," a 
sheriff's office statement said.

Peter Hoesel, Brisbin's stepfather, called 911 about 7 p.m. after 
finding his stepson unresponsive in his car, officials said. An initial 
investigation Friday night revealed two household chemicals in the car 
that when mixed together make hydrogen sulfide, a deadly vapor, 
sheriff's authorities said.

A blaze erupted at a vacant chemical plant just before sunrise Sunday in 
one of the country's poorest cities, causing the building to partially 
collapse and forcing firefighters to evacuate nearby homes.

The fire at Concord Chemical Inc. in Camden, across the Delaware River 
from Philadelphia, comes more than a week after fires at an abandoned 
tire factory and a downtown warehouse.

Hazmat crews were checking to see if any chemicals were left in the 
former plant, which was vacated two years ago, Philadelphia's WPVI-TV 
reported.

The plant made detergents and cleaning products and underwent a 
nine-month, $1 million cleanup of asbestos and potentially explosive 
hazardous materials that the Environmental Protection Agency completed 
in May, the Courier-Post reported.

A mixture of chemicals caused an explosion at a leisure centre which 
injured three staff, a fire service spokesman has said.
Specialist officers from Humberside Fire Service attended Scunthorpe's 
Pods Leisure Centre, which is due to open next month, to help tackle the 
blast, which happened at 10.40am on Saturday.

The three male staff members were treated at the scene for cuts, bruises 
and the possible effects of breathing in chemicals, and two were taken 
to hospital.

There was no risk to members of the public and the chemicals were 
contained within the building.

A fire service spokesman said: "It is believed that a mixture of 
chemicals caused the explosion in the filtration system located in the 
plant room. Specialist chemical officers from the fire service were 
called to establish the type of chemicals involved.
