Subject: Administrivia: New DCHAS-L SPAM filter

Over the last couple of months, the amount of spam being submitted to
the various e-mail lists I moderate has increased significantly (up
to 30 - 40 messages/day for the 4 lists combined).

In order to control this problem, I have instituted a LISTSERV
feature that requires e-mail addresses not on the list to confirm
that the message sent to the list was actually sent from that
address. This means that if your From: address is not on the DCHAS-L
list, you will receive an e-mail back asking you if you really sent
the posting to the list. The instructions to confirm that you sent it
are in the e-mail and are simple: either reply to the e-mail with
"ok" or click on the unique link included in the e-mail. The message
will then be sent to me for moderation - the usual check to avoid
flammable material, misaddressed messages and spam.

If you are a regular poster who is receiving list e-mail at an
address different from your From: address, I can add your From:
address to the list and set it to NOMAIL so that you can avoid this
procedure. Let me know if you have any questions about this.

Thanks for your interest in DCHAS-L!

- Ralph
