Re TNT stability:

Yes, YES INDEED! TNT does degrade over time to less stable stuff. 
although 100 grams of TNT does not seem like much, it is enough to blow
up a big tree or two if as components of about 20 grams each, properly
placed, and sequentially detonated in a few microsecond sequence.
