Dear Dr. Marlow, Thanks for your inquiry to the DCHAS-L Discussion List about the ACS short course "Laboratory Safety and Health." Having just taken over as Assistant Director for ACS Continuing Education, your question gave me a chance to look into the course's history. It turns out this short course was first taught in 1974 under the directorship of Norman Steere who ran this popular program for over 2 decades. In the mid-1990s, Roger Conrad became course director. You may very well know Mr. Conrad since he is a member of both ACS and the CHAS division. In answer to the question "is this a newer course", I think it safe to say that under both directors, the course has been continuously updated as new health concerns impact scientists working in laboratories, and new rules and regulations are implemented at state and national levels to address those health concerns. I'm sure the 2006 ACS short course "Laboratory Safety and Health" is related to its 1974 progenitor, but is nonetheless different. Again, thanks for your inquiry. Please feel free to contact me if you have further questions. Several of our founders participated in the development thereof. Is this a newer course? I speak as a former chair of the Div CHAS, myself.
