You will find the answer to your concerns in volumes 1 and 2 of "Safety
in Academic Chemistry Laboratories, single copies free from the Chem
Safety office of the American Chemical Society.

Also, for gosh' sakes why don't you join the Chemical Safety division of
the ACS?  Then you would be able to keep up with all this good stuff.
