Still Life

Slab built, cast bottle, coiled pear and bowl/multifired underglazes, earthenware
16.5"x 21"x 6"
1993

Artist Statement

In these pieces my particular concern was the play between two
dimensions and three dimensions.

In "Still Life", the background mimics, in 2-D, the free-standing wine
bottle and the pear in the bowl. Or do the modeled forms mimic the
drawings?

The piece called "Bird Form" has images of pots within pots in 2-D which
are on the curved surface of the actual vessel. I aimed for a visual pun. (It
amuses me anyway.)

Working in this way not only requires multiple firings and use of graphic
tape but also requires two or three coats of the one-strokes and underglazes. I
am thinking of loosening up and letting the color work become more
gestural.

Originally I majored in painting although I had clay play opportunities as
a small child. Then one ceramics course in art school determined the rest of
my life.
